All about the Chesterfield coat

El abrigo es, sin lugar a dudas, la prenda estrella de la temporada fría. La pieza que más y mejor marca la personalidad del que la luce. Es, en definitiva, toda una declaración de estilo y de principios. Siempre he pensado que un buen abrigo te resuelve el look. Para el típico día en el que a uno le apetece complicarse la vida con su outfit, un pantalón de buen corte, un suerter de punto y un majestuoso e imponente abrigo y voila!, estilismo y problema solucionado. Como buen amente de las prendas de abrigo, he pensado dedicar esta serie de posts especiales, a través de los cuales repasaré la historia y características de los mismos, y además, incluiré ejemplos actuales; tanto los vistos en las pasarelas de moda más importantes, como los que ya puedes comparar en las tiendas. The coat is, without a doubt, the star garment of the cold season. The piece that more and better gives personality to who wears it. Ultimately, it is a statement of your own personal style. I have always thought that a good overcoat resolves the look. As an outerwear lover, I thought to take this special series of posts, through I will review the history and characteristics of the most iconic overcoats and, in addition, including current examples; from the most important fashion shows, to the pieces that you can already buy at the stores. Chesterfield Coat

Parece que no está del todo claro cuando se confeccionó este elegante abrigo por primera vez. Hay quienes aseguran que fue el cuarto conde de Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope, quien lo llevó por primera vez, en teoría, a principios del 1800. Sin embargo, tiene más fuerza la teoría que apunta que fue el sexto conde de Chesterfield, George Stanhope, quien ideó esta prenda a mediados del siglo XIX. El sofisticado conde pertenecía a un elitista grupo de dandis a los que se les atribuye el gran cambio de aires en la indumentaria masculina por aquel entences, imponiéndose el estilo Victoriano mucho menos decorado y recargado que las corrientes anteriores. El Chesterfield está considerado como el primer abrigo masculino propiamente dicho ya que, hasta el momento, se utilizaban otro tipo de prendas exteriores como las capas. Confeccionado en lana casi siempre de gramaje muy grueso. El clásico Chesterfield, el original, es el de solapa simple con una única fila de botones que queda cubierta. Aunque también lo podemos encontrar en versiones double breasted, es decir, con solapa cruzada. Las solapas del cuello son cortas, y están recubiertas por terciopelo negro, normalmente las traseras, aunque como vemos en la primera ilustración también se admiten las delanteras. Además, los bolsillos laterales son rectos y lleva un bolsillo frontal de pañuelo. Otra de sus características principales es que posee una única abertura en la parte posterior y no tiene puños. Además, no lleva las costuras marcadas. En cuando al largo, el clásico 'chester' debe llegar justo a la altura de la rodilla, aunque en la actualidad muchas firmas lo hayan acortado o alargado a su antojo.

It's no clear when this elegant coat was made the first time. Some theories say that it was the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope, who wore it the first time at the beginning of the 1800. However, there is another theory pointing that was the sixth Earl of Chesterfield, George Stanhope, who created this garment in the middle of the 19th century. This elegant and sophisticated overcoat belonged to an elitist group of dandies who is attributed the great change of scenery in the male clothing of that time, imposing the Victorian style much less decorated to previous trends. The Chesterfield is considered the first male overcoat ever. It is made of very thick wool. The classic Chesterfield, the original, has only one breasted and a row of buttons that is always covered. Although we can also find it in double breasted versions. The collar and its lapels are short, and are half-covered in black velvet. In addition, side pockets are straight. One of its main features is that carries a single opening in the back and has not cuffs. Also hasn't marked seams or sidebodies. About he length, the classic 'chester' must come right to the knee, although nowadays the length can be been shortened or lengthened.

Con tramas estampadas como vemos en Prada, Missoni, Tommy Hilfiger o Hackett. Con solapas cruzadas en Gucci. Con las solapas desprovistas de la cubieta de terciopelo en Richard Chai. Al punto minimal graphic en Iceberg. O ultralargo como en Duckie Brown. Lo que está claro es que el 'chester' sigo una de las piezas más de abrigo más reeditadas por diseñadores y firmas de prestigio.
